What To Consider When Designing A New Golf Course Layout

The golf course layout which is familiar to us all has been designed for a reason. Although there are many variations on the common theme due to the great differences in the terrain on which golf courses are built, they all tend to follow a similar pattern of parallel holes. Golf courses take up a lot of room, and there is a need to reduce this as much as possible. There is also a definite need to make sure that the distance between the green on one hole and the tee on the next one is reduced as far as possible.

Designing golf courses is big business, and it has even attracted some of the legends of the game once they had finished playing on the main tour. The game is expanding, and so is the population, so there is a definite need for more courses. The problem is that most of the best land for golf courses has already been used, so each new development has a more difficult job than the last.

There are also concerns with the ever increasing need to look after the environment, as gold courses do use up a lot of resources. These problems are being addressed in some very creative ways by some of the best course designers. In many places, however, even something as simple as installing low energy lighting to save power is overlooked. Cutting down unnecessary power consumption and using indigenous grasses to save fertilizer are two of the most important steps which can be taken.

The club house and other buildings can also be made a lot more energy efficient by installing a green roof system. By covering the roof with a waterproof layer, and then adding foliage on top of that, you can achieve several important benefits. Firstly, there is added insulation which will cut down fuel consumption. Then, there is the beneficial effect the foliage has on both water and air by filtering pollution. These methods of improving the environment instead of impacting upon it negatively are being implemented all to infrequently, yet they are ideal for golf as the surroundings are all green anyway.

To complement this, the golf course layout needs to be as economical as possible. This means that the holes need to be parallel to each other as much as possible, to save space. It is still better to work with nature, even though modern equipment can basically build anything anywhere. This is because the impact on the surrounding area can be greatly reduced. There is always the need to place tees as near as possible to the green of the previous hole, as any unnecessary inconvenience is hardly likely to make the course more popular. Regardless of any other consideration, the players must always come first when it comes to golf course layout.
